Natural disasters in 2011 provided toll costliest in history — a whopping $ 380 billion worth of losses from earthquakes, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, forest fires, tsunamis and much more. Only a third of those costs borne by insurers. And ignore completely all tally costs associated with diseases or injuries that triggered by disaster.
The priciest one event last year’s earthquake and tsunami in Japan 9, who wrought some $ 210 billion worth of destruction, followed in second place a series of earthquakes in New Zealand that triggered a $ 16 billion worth of destruction, from Note Ernst Rauch of Munich Reinsurance company’s headquarters in Munich.
After sifting through it, on January 4, Rauch and several others, a professional disaster analysts trying to put 2011 in context. Expensive like the Asian quakes, they did not show for each of the up-tick in geologic activity, Rauch noted. Earth tremor in 2011 equivalent annually over the past three decades. Last year in Asia only prove particularly expensive because they occur in countries rich in dense sites-many of them are well-indemnified.
Instead, he noted, what is not kept with a constant speed over time has been the number of storms, droughts and forest fires. This climate-related events weather has climbed steadily since 1980, the increase in the number, severity (such as average wind intensity) and often in life is gone. Trends, Rauch said, provide strong evidence that climate change has impacted human and economic suffering in the world.
