Car theft spike as students cold Milwaukee Journal Sentinel jump

High school students who don’t feel like walking to school in winter caused a surge in car thefts on the north side of Milwaukee, police said Wednesday.

In a week or so, District 7 police has seen a 43% increase in car theft, up from about 25 a week, and many of them are by students who saw the car unattended which their owners have left to warm up with a key in the machine.

In all districts of the city, car theft increased 58% from 168 in three weeks, beginning on 22 November 2011 to 266 in a period of approximately three weeks from the date 11 December through January 3, 2012, according to Milwaukee police statistics.

Catch recently often occur between 7 and 8 am, or in the afternoon while the driver was stopped by a coffee shop or a pizza place, says Lubus.
